Reluctant government partners are still talking to each other

The difficult parts of a Government deal have yet to be addressed, despite some progress. Behind closed doors, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party are daily agreeing and ticking off elements of a possible Programme for Government. However, sources close to the process still talk about the chances of agreement being just 50/50. Sources in the three parties agree that it is not guaranteed they will agree a full document when these talks end. Pressure for new government may be resisted for some time yet as Covid 19 crisis continues

So, eight weeks since the general election, there is still no new Government. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael remain in contact with each other. The expectation is that – one day – there will be a new government involving both of them. However, to have a stable Dáil majority they need another party to join them – the common wisdom is that recruiting a group of independents to back them would be to unstable.
