The tension between the public funded national broadcaster and private media interests is one of the many features Ireland has in common with the UK.
This week the BBC took an aggressive stance in defending itself against what it sees as unfair attacks from the Sun.
Instead of a dreary press release or aggrieved spokesperson popping up on radio, the BBC instead deftly deployed Twitter and an infographic to good effect:
It’s a brave move to take the fight to the Murdoch press, and a move that won’t have been taken without careful consideration.
The infographic calls the Sun on an apparent skewed presentation of the facts, and directly challenges on key areas of debate.
Whilst the relationship between our own national broadcaster RTE and the privately owned media is less fraught, there’s good food for thought here on PR tactics; not least for RTE, TV3 and UTV where tensions appear to be escalating ahead of the UTV Ireland launch.
